ALCOHOL & DRUG ABUSE

Move Forward in Your Life

Recognizing the negative impact that alcohol or other drugs may be having on you can be frightening. Substances are oftentimes one of the ways people may cope with stress or other negative emotional experiences.

It can be scary to give up something that you feel has gotten you through difficult times.  However, substance abuse is like putting a bandaid on a wound, it might temporarily cover your problems, but it does not help you fix the root of your problems.

Substance abuse is extremely complex, in that there are biological brain changes and psychological components that maintain addiction and make it challenging to stop. With the right treatment and support, you can move forward in your life without substances.

Understand the Emotional Factors

Dr. Peterson has trained in outpatient centers for substance abuse, leading intensive outpatient programming and conducting individual psychotherapy. She primarily utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Substance Use Disorders (CBT-SUD) and Motivational Interviewing (MI).

This treatment helps you better understand what's behind your use and helps you explore what living a life without substances could look like for you.

She can also help you decide if a higher level of care is needed for your substance use and provide appropriate referrals, including intensive outpatient programs or inpatient programs.
