For example, if you are fearful of germs, you may wash your hands numerous times per day or limit how often you leave your house for fear of being exposed to germs. This avoidance can quickly and negatively impact your life and make it more challenging to engage in valued activities.
However, you can retrain your brain to not experience as much fear when confronted with these triggers. Our brains naturally habituate to things we are exposed to repeatedly and we can get more comfortable with things that make us anxious over time because of this.
Through this treatment, you will learn to confront your thoughts, images, objects, or situations that spur your anxiety within a safe and supportive atmosphere.
You will have a chance to learn how to manage your urges to engage in compulsive behavior that may serve as a safety mechanism and maintain your anxiety.
