Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

What is ADHD/ADD?

ADHD is a disorder of the brain and nervous system that affects people of all ages. ADHD is most commonly characterized by difficulties with concentration and difficulties with hyperactivity and/or impulsiveness.

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a form of ADHD that encompasses only the concentration and focus difficulties without the hyperactivity or impulsiveness. These symptoms are typically seen before the age of 12.

However signs of ADHD/ADD can be quite different depending on the individual.
Adult ADHD symptoms may also look different than what is typically seen in children. For example, adults tend to display fewer symptoms related to hyperactivity compared to children and teenagers.

However, adults with ADHD may continue to struggle with difficulties staying focused, impulsivity, mood swings, and poor time management and organizational skills.

Accurate diagnosis is key for the treatment of ADHD-related symptoms, especially as many of these symptoms can overlap with other mental health problems. With an accurate diagnosis, you can receive the most effective care for your concerns.

WHAT DOES AN ADHD ASSESSMENT LOOK LIKE?

Dr. Peterson is qualified to conduct ADHD/ADD evaluations to determine if your symptoms are consistent with these diagnoses. This comprehensive assessment process typically includes a standardized interview with you regarding your symptoms and symptom history, psychological questionnaires, and interviews with others in your life who know you well.

This process typically takes at least 2 sessions to gather all the necessary information for a diagnosis.

Diagnosing the disorder is the first step towards learning how to cope with ADD/ADHD and can lead to a better quality of life.
